Making holes or cutouts in sheet metal by forcing a punch through it into a matching die, shearing out material.

Revise: Fabricating and ConstructingPunching uses a punch and a matching die to remove a piece of sheet metal. The sheet rests over the die opening. As the punch moves down, it shears through the sheet and pushes the removed piece, called a slug, through the die.
Distinguish stamping from punching: stamping can form a three-dimensional shape, whereas punching primarily removes material to make holes or cutouts. Punching can also be an operation within stamping.
