Flowchart

A diagram using symbols and directional arrows to show the sequence of instructions and decisions in a routine.

A flowchart represents these instructions as a diagram. Its symbols show the different kinds of step, while arrows show the order in which they happen. This helps a designer plan a routine, communicate it to someone else and check its logic before using it in a product.

Use standard symbols in circuit diagrams, labelled functional boxes in block diagrams, and labelled Yes/No branches from flowchart decisions.

A flowchart shows the order of actions and decisions. Start and stop use rounded terminal shapes; an input or output uses a parallelogram; a process, such as updating a count or waiting, uses a rectangle; a decision uses a diamond. Arrows show which step happens next, and decision branches are labelled Yes and No.
