Biomass

Biomass is the biological material that makes up living organisms. Photosynthetic organisms produce the biomass that supports food chains and life on Earth. They are called producers because they synthesise — make — biological molecules rather than obtaining them by eating other organisms.

This also makes them the main producers of biomass, the biological material making up organisms. Glucose provides material for growth: plants can convert it into cellulose for cell walls, starch for storage and fats or oils. With nitrogen obtained from mineral ions, they can also make amino acids for proteins.
