Trierarchy

The main military liturgy was the trierarchy. The trierarch paid to equip and maintain a trireme and its crew for a year, and was expected to command the ship himself. Because most of the fleet was kept ready in this way, wealthy citizens' money turned Athens' ships into working warships.
