Revise: Athenian Military Organisation, Recruitment and FundingThe trierarch paid to equip and maintain a trireme and its crew for a year, and was expected to command the ship himself. Because most of the fleet was kept ready in this way, wealthy citizens' money turned Athens' ships into working warships.

Keep army and navy separate in your answers: hoplites paid for their own equipment, while public money (Laurium silver, tribute, reserves) and the trierarchs paid for ships and crews.
Distinguish naval command levels: a fleet prefect commanded a fleet, a nauarch commanded a squadron, and a trierarch commanded a ship. A ship's crew could be organised as a century without containing exactly 80 men.
