Revise: Roman HousingIn larger houses, the rear garden was surrounded by a peristyle, a walkway lined with columns. Rooms opened onto this sheltered circulation space. The open garden admitted fresh air and light, offered somewhere to relax or socialise, and could give an urban house a countryside atmosphere.
