Tolerance

Accepting other people's freedom to hold different beliefs and live differently, even when one disagrees with them.

Key British principles and values include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. They are not unique to Britain, nor does every person always live up to them. They provide standards against which behaviour and decisions can be judged.

The willingness to live peacefully alongside people whose beliefs, opinions or ways of life differ from your own.

Tolerance does not mean agreeing with every belief, and individual liberty does not mean freedom to harm others.

Distinguish respecting a person's rights from agreeing with their beliefs. Tolerance allows disagreement.

Allowing others to hold different beliefs or follow different lawful practices, even when you disagree with them.

Tolerance means allowing differences that you may not personally support. Mutual understanding goes further: people learn about one another’s experiences and try to understand why others think or act differently. Neither requires accepting abuse, discrimination or violence.

Accepting that others may hold different beliefs or live differently without unfairly interfering with their freedoms.
