Mutual respect

Treating one another with dignity and consideration, including people whose beliefs or backgrounds differ from one's own.

Key British principles and values include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. They are not unique to Britain, nor does every person always live up to them. They provide standards against which behaviour and decisions can be judged.

Treating one another with consideration and recognising one another's dignity, feelings and rights, despite differences.

When explaining why mutual respect matters, link it to a consequence: for example, people feel included and are more able to participate in democratic debate.

Valuing other people’s equal rights and treating them fairly, while recognising that their beliefs, backgrounds and lifestyles may differ from your own.

Mutual respect means recognising that other people have equal rights and deserve fair treatment, even when their views differ from your own. It is mutual because respect should work in both directions.
