Identity

A person's sense of who they are, shaped by their characteristics, experiences, beliefs and relationships with others.

The characteristics, beliefs, experiences and connections that shape who a person or group is, including how they see themselves and how others see them.

Identity means the characteristics, beliefs, experiences and connections that shape who a person or group is. It includes how people see themselves and how others see them. Someone might describe themselves through their family, interests, faith, home town or nationality, rather than choosing just one label.

Do not assume that identities compete: explain how local, cultural, national and global identities can coexist.

When explaining multiple identities, show how one person can hold several identities at the same time, rather than listing identities belonging to different people.

When explaining an influence on identity, link the factor to a person's experiences, choices or sense of belonging rather than simply listing labels.

The combination of characteristics, experiences and relationships through which a person understands who they are and where they belong.

Identity is the combination of characteristics, experiences and relationships through which a person understands who they are and where they belong. It includes personal qualities, but also connections to other people: a family, a faith community, a neighbourhood or a nation.
