Ethnicity

A person's ethnic background, associated with shared ancestry, cultural heritage and traditions.

A shared heritage or background that may include ancestry, culture, language and traditions.

Ethnicity refers to a shared heritage or background, which may include ancestry, culture, language and traditions. These can give people a connection to family history and a wider community. They are not the same as nationality or religion: people with a shared ethnic background do not necessarily have the same citizenship or beliefs.

Distinguish ethnicity, nationality and religion: they may overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Distinguish ethnicity from nationality. The census category ‘White’ is not the same as ‘White British’.

Keep ethnicity, nationality and religion separate. An ethnic minority background does not mean that someone is a migrant.

A person's self-identified group based on their perceived ethnic and cultural background, which may involve shared ancestry, language or traditions.

Four important aspects are age, ethnicity, religion and disability. These help explain how communities change and why the services people need may change too.
