A solid particle of carbon produced during incomplete combustion of a carbon-containing fuel.

Link each pollutant to its specific cause: limited oxygen → carbon monoxide and soot; sulfur in the fuel → sulfur dioxide; high temperature in air → oxides of nitrogen.
Remember that soot means solid carbon particles, whereas carbon monoxide is a gas.
Do not state that incomplete combustion produces only carbon monoxide or soot: water is also formed when the hydrogen in a hydrocarbon is oxidised.

If the oxygen supply is even more restricted, some carbon from the hydrocarbon may not combine with oxygen at all. It remains as fine particles of solid carbon called soot. The hydrogen in the fuel can still react with oxygen to form water.
