Specification 4.10.1.3 · Paper 2
Revise: Waste Water TreatmentSedimentation therefore produces two different streams, and each receives a different biological treatment.
Specification 2.12 · Paper 1
The settling of insoluble particles to the bottom of a liquid when it is left still.
Revise: Potable Water TreatmentDuring sedimentation, insoluble particles sink and form a layer of sediment at the bottom; water can be taken from above it. Next, filtration through layers such as sand and gravel traps smaller insoluble particles that did not settle. Neither settling nor filtering removes substances that are dissolved in the water.
Specification C6.3g · Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher)
The separation of suspended solids from a liquid by allowing the solids to settle.
For a sequence question, give the stages in order: screening and grit removal → sedimentation → anaerobic digestion of sludge and aerobic biological treatment of effluent.
State what sedimentation produces as well as what happens: solids sink to form sludge, leaving liquid effluent above.
Give the stages for treating waste or groundwater in order: sedimentation, filtration, then chlorination. Explain what each removes or kills.
