Specification 4.10.1.3 · Paper 2
Revise: Waste Water TreatmentThe liquid above the sludge is called effluent. Sedimentation therefore produces two different streams, and each receives a different biological treatment.
For a sequence question, give the stages in order: screening and grit removal → sedimentation → anaerobic digestion of sludge and aerobic biological treatment of effluent.
Do not swap the two biological treatments: sludge is digested anaerobically; effluent is treated aerobically.
State what sedimentation produces as well as what happens: solids sink to form sludge, leaving liquid effluent above.
