Revise: Metal Extraction PrinciplesMost metals occur in ores as compounds rather than as pure metals. To obtain a metal from a metal oxide, its oxygen must be removed: the metal oxide is reduced. The position of carbon in the reactivity series tells us when carbon can do this.

Revise: Principles of metal extractionThe Earth’s crust supplies metal ores, but most metals in ores are chemically combined with other elements. For example, a metal may occur as a metal oxide rather than as the metallic element. Extraction changes the metal compound into the metal itself.

Do not assume that every metal low in the reactivity series is found only as an uncombined element: copper is relatively unreactive, but is commonly extracted from ores.
When asked how a metal is extracted from its ore, state that the metal compound or metal ions are reduced; do not say that the whole ore is reduced to nothing.
When asked to evaluate a method, give both advantages and disadvantages and then reach a justified conclusion linked to the situation, such as the ore grade, extraction speed or environmental risk.
