Specification 4.4.1.3 · Paper 1
Revise: Metal ExtractionObtaining a metal in this way is called extraction.
Specification 4.6 · Paper 1
The process of obtaining a metal from a material such as an ore.
Revise: Reduction in ExtractionExtraction must change the metal from its combined form into the elemental metal. Chemically, that change is reduction. This is why metal extraction is described as the reduction of ores: more precisely, the metal compound or metal ions obtained from the ore are reduced.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
The removal of a metal from a compound containing it.
Revise: Principles of metal extractionExtraction changes the metal compound into the metal itself.
Base the extraction method on the metal’s position relative to carbon, not simply on whether the metal seems reactive.
If an equation is requested, check that every element has the same number of atoms on both sides. The simplified overall equation for zinc extraction is .
