Revise: Problems and reduction of pollutantsIn a gas scrubber, the gases contact an alkaline material such as calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide or powdered limestone, which contains calcium carbonate. The alkaline substance neutralises acidic sulfur dioxide.
Do not confuse a catalytic converter with a gas scrubber: converters treat vehicle exhaust gases, whereas scrubbers remove sulfur dioxide from flue gases.
