GCSE Chemistry · key term
Rain made more acidic when pollutant gases, including sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, form acids in atmospheric water.

Specification 4.9.3.2 · Paper 2
Revise: Effects of PollutantsThese gases also cause acid rain. They form acids when they mix with water in the atmosphere. That acidic water can then fall as rain.
Specification 8.12 · Paper 2
Rain or other precipitation that is more acidic than normal because acidic gases have dissolved in atmospheric water.
Revise: Acid RainWhen the droplets fall as rain, snow or other precipitation, the result is acid rain.
Specification C6.3f · Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 4 (Higher)
Rain made more acidic when atmospheric gases such as sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen form acids in rainwater.
Revise: Atmospheric PollutantsSulfur dioxide irritates the respiratory system. It can also form acids in rainwater. This acid rain can harm trees and aquatic life and wear away materials such as limestone in buildings.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
Rain or other precipitation made unusually acidic mainly by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides reacting with oxygen and water in the atmosphere.
Revise: Problems and reduction of pollutantsOthers are indirect: pollutants undergo reactions in the atmosphere, producing acid rain or contributing to smog. Scientists therefore monitor pollutant concentrations as well as developing ways to prevent or remove emissions.
Link each pollutant to its specific effects: carbon monoxide → toxicity; sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides → respiratory problems and acid rain; particulates → health problems and global dimming.
Do not confuse acid rain with the greenhouse effect. Acid rain concerns acidic pollutants in rain; the greenhouse effect concerns gases absorbing and re-radiating infrared radiation.
For acid rain, name sulfur dioxide or oxides of nitrogen and explain that they form acids in rainwater.
