Revise: Particles in States of MatterA substance can be a solid, liquid or gas. The particle model helps us describe each state by considering how its particles are arranged, how they move and how much energy they have. The particles are the substance itself; they are not little objects suspended inside it.

A state in which particles are far apart and move rapidly and randomly through the available space.
Revise: The particle modelIn a gas, particles are much further apart and move rapidly and randomly in all directions. They travel throughout the available space, so a gas fills its container and has neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume. A gas is much easier to compress because there is plenty of empty space into which its particles can be pushed.
Do not say that particles themselves expand, melt or become a gas. The spacing, arrangement, movement and energy of the particles change.
