Definition

A particle or molecule made from two atoms; elemental halogens exist as diatomic molecules such as $Cl_2$ .

At room temperature they are colourless, odourless gases made of individual atoms rather than diatomic molecules. They have very low boiling points, although boiling point increases down the group.
