Used by Edexcel
Specification 5.5 · Paper 1
Revise: Bacterial Infections: Cholera, TB and Stomach UlcersBacteria called Helicobacter, commonly Helicobacter pylori, can cause stomach ulcers. An ulcer is a break or sore in the lining of an organ. Here, the bacterium is the pathogen and the stomach ulcer is the resulting damage.
Link each infection to both its pathogen type and its stated effect: cholera — bacteria — diarrhoea; tuberculosis — bacteria — lung damage; Helicobacter — bacteria — stomach ulcers.
Do not describe a stomach ulcer itself as a pathogen. The pathogen is a Helicobacter bacterium; the ulcer is damage associated with the infection.
