Revise: Carbon and water cyclesCarbon is held in several stores. The atmosphere contains carbon dioxide, oceans contain dissolved carbon compounds, and living organisms contain carbon in their biomass. Carbon can also remain in dead material, soil and fossil fuels.
Do not say that matter is ‘used up’. Atoms and molecules move between living (biotic) organisms and non-living (abiotic) stores, although they may be held in one store for some time.
