Revise: Hormonal ContraceptionThe combined oral contraceptive pill contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone; the progesterone-like hormone is called a progestogen. These hormones suppress the release of FSH and LH. With less FSH, a follicle is less likely to mature; without the usual LH surge, ovulation does not take place.
