Revise: Classification systemsPatterns of molecular similarity are used to construct a phylogenetic tree. A branch point represents a common ancestor, while two groups whose branches meet more recently are interpreted as more closely related. The tree is a hypothesis supported by the evidence analysed; it is not a ladder showing that one living species changed directly into another.
