The study of evolutionary relationships using biological molecules, particularly comparisons of DNA sequences.

In molecular phylogenetics, scientists compare the sequences of equivalent genes or DNA regions from different organisms. The sequences are aligned so that corresponding positions can be compared. Scientists can then identify or calculate the number of differences between them.
