The process by which one cell divides to produce two genetically identical cells.
Revise: Cell DifferentiationThis is different from mitosis. Mitosis increases cell number by producing genetically identical cells; differentiation gives cells different structures and roles. Growth and development therefore work together: mitosis supplies new cells, while differentiation produces the variety of specialised cells that the organism needs.
- Revise: Mitosis and Cell Cycle
The stage of the cell cycle in which one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell and the nucleus divides.
- Revise: Sexual vs Asexual Reproduction
Cell division that produces genetically identical cells and is the only type of cell division involved in asexual reproduction.
