Specification 2.2, 2.5 · Paper 1
Revise: Importance of MitosisThere are three central roles: growth, repair and asexual reproduction.
A permanent increase in the size or dry mass of an organism.
If asked why mitosis is important, do more than list “growth, repair and asexual reproduction”: link each role to the production of new, genetically identical cells.
When comparing animal and plant growth, write matched statements: animals use cell division and differentiation, whereas plants also use cell elongation.
For plant growth, give the processes in order: cell division near the root or shoot tip, elongation behind this region, then differentiation.
