Revise: SpeciationGene flow between the populations is stopped or greatly reduced, so alleles are no longer regularly mixed between them.

The movement of alleles between populations, for example when pollen from a GM crop fertilises a sexually compatible plant.
Revise: GM OrganismsThe inserted allele could then enter another population. This gene flow is not possible between any two plant species indiscriminately; successful fertilisation and viable offspring are required. If the introduced characteristic gives plants an advantage outside the field, its spread could be difficult to control.

Revise: Benefits and RisksThis creates practical environmental questions: how likely is gene flow, which organisms could receive the gene, and what effect might the new characteristic have? Long-term studies are important because an adverse effect may not become apparent during a short trial.
