Barrier method

Spermicides kill or disable sperm and may be used alongside a barrier method, rather than relied on alone.

Barrier methods physically prevent sperm from reaching an egg, so fertilisation cannot occur. External condoms, internal condoms and diaphragms or caps are examples. A diaphragm or cap is placed over the cervix and is usually used with spermicide.

Diaphragms and caps are also barrier methods.
