Funding and regulation
Media industries
What you need to know
Funding models: government funded (such as the BBC licence fee), not-for-profit, and commercial (advertising, sales, subscriptions and in-game purchases).
Regulation: why the media are regulated and by whom, including Ofcom for broadcasting, IPSO for the press, the BBFC for film and PEGI age ratings for video games, which the Video Standards Council applies in the UK, and the difference between statutory and self-regulation.
The challenges digital technologies bring: online content that crosses borders, global platforms, user-generated content and age limits that are hard to enforce.
Short recall answers, such as naming a regulator or a funding model in a one-mark question.
