Properties and Ecological Footprint
What you need to know
Differentiate between natural and synthetic plastics, and understand the basic principles of the polymerisation process.
Analyze the strengths, weaknesses, and working properties of common thermoforming plastics (e.g., acrylic, polythene, PVC, nylon) and thermosetting plastics (e.g., urea formaldehyde, melamine, epoxy resins).
Evaluate the physical properties (thermal/electrical conductivity) and mechanical properties (tensile strength, toughness, plasticity, malleability, hardness) of polymers.
Assess the ecological and social footprint of polymer production, including the environmental impact of oil extraction and greenhouse gas emissions.
Apply life-cycle analysis to plastic products and support societal shifts toward comprehensive plastics recycling.
