Edexcel GCSE Design and Technology key terms

Paper-making fibres obtained from fresh raw materials rather than recovered paper.

The amount of three-dimensional space an object takes up, measured in cubic units such as mm³, cm³ or m³.

A soft, bulky material used as the middle layer of a quilted textile.

The amount of money paid to a worker for their work.

The set of yarns running along the length of a woven fabric.

A change in a timber’s shape, such as bending or twisting, often associated with changes in moisture content.

A fabric constructed by machine from yarns forming interlocking loops along its length.

A fabric construction in which multiple yarns form interlinked loops along the length of the fabric. It is produced on industrial machinery.

A thin ring placed between a nut or bolt head and the surface being fastened to spread the clamping load and help prevent surface damage.

A manufacturing approach that removes material to obtain the required shape or size.

Removing material from a workpiece to produce the required size or shape.

Treatment that prevents water passing through a textile.

The ability of a material to resist damage caused by rubbing against another surface.

The ability to withstand outdoor conditions, such as rain and sunlight, without unacceptable deterioration.

The part of a structural section that connects its flanges, such as the central vertical part of an I-beam.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment: discarded electrical or electronic equipment; the WEEE Directive establishes responsibilities for its collection, treatment, recovery and disposal.

The set of yarns running across the width of a woven fabric, interlacing with the warp.

A fabric constructed from interlocking loops of yarn formed in rows across its width.

A fabric construction in which yarn forms interlocking loops in rows across the width of the fabric. It can be produced by hand or machine.

How heavy a material or finished product is; lightweight materials can reduce handling and transport burdens.

Joining compatible synthetic materials by applying heat and pressure so their surfaces soften or melt and unite as they cool.

The movement of liquid along fibres or through a fabric, even when the fibres themselves absorb little moisture.

The uprooting of trees by strong winds.

A device whose blades are turned by moving air to drive a generator and produce electricity.

Metal supplied as a long, slender strand, commonly with a round cross-section.
