A scatter diagram represents pairs of numerical values. Each point must contain measurements belonging together: for example, a temperature and the charging time recorded at that temperature.

On a scatter diagram, put the explanatory variable on the horizontal x-axis and the response variable on the vertical y-axis. Label both axes with names and units where appropriate.

Justify a choice by linking the data type to what the representation shows: ‘The data are paired numerical measurements, so a scatter diagram will show their relationship.’

When interpreting a scatter diagram, name both variables and use ‘tends to’ rather than claiming that every point follows the pattern.
