Revise: Minimising data distortion and biasOther variables that could affect the response are called extraneous variables. If these differ between the conditions being compared, an apparent effect may be partly due to them rather than to the explanatory variable.
A factor other than the variable being investigated that could affect an experiment’s results.
When asked to identify an extraneous variable, name a specific factor in the experiment and explain how it could affect the result.
For matched pairs, name relevant matching characteristics and explain how matching reduces the influence of differences between participants. It does not guarantee that all extraneous variables are controlled.
