Revise: Religion and BeliefReligion involves beliefs and practices concerning the sacred or divine. Belief systems can also be non-religious: a person does not need to follow a religion to hold values that guide their life. Sociology examines how society responds to these identities, rather than deciding whether particular beliefs are true.
Distinguish religion from ethnicity. They can overlap, but they are not the same characteristic.
For an assessment, weigh discrimination and exclusion against legal protection and practical community support. Avoid assuming that everyone sharing a religion has identical life chances.
