An electoral system in which the candidate with the most votes wins the constituency seat.

Revise: Research and Political Key TermsUnder first past the post, the candidate with the most votes wins the constituency seat. Suppose three candidates receive different numbers of votes: the largest total wins, even if the other candidates together received more votes. The system selects a representative for that constituency; it does not require the winner to receive more than half of all votes cast.
For first past the post, the candidate needs the most votes in the constituency, not necessarily more than half of all votes.
When comparing electoral systems, distinguish winning an individual constituency under first past the post from allocating seats according to vote shares under proportional representation.
