Competition

A timetable and responses to lateness teach punctuality; following teachers' instructions teaches obedience to authority; examinations and sporting contests can teach competition. Rules about attendance, dress and conduct encourage conformity, while praise for high achievement communicates what the school values. These are learned through everyday experience rather than simply through a planned lesson about them.
