Revise: Ethical Issues in ResearchAnonymity means preventing participants from being identified. Researchers can remove names and other identifying details, or replace real names with pseudonyms. These protections matter because disclosure could lead to embarrassment, damaged relationships or unfair treatment.

Confidentiality concerns how information is handled; anonymity concerns whether a participant can be identified. A researcher conducting a face-to-face interview may know the participant’s name, but can still keep the interview confidential and protect their identity in the published findings.
