Paper 1
Revise: Places of WorshipThe names temple, shrine, vihara and gompa describe different spaces or functions, but they are not completely separate categories. A monastery may contain a temple, a shrine room and a meditation hall. Their appearance and organisation vary between Buddhist traditions and countries, including among Buddhist communities in Britain.
Paper 3
A Buddhist monastery where monks or nuns live and devote themselves to studying and practising the Buddha’s teachings.
Revise: Buddhist Places of WorshipA vihara is a monastery: a place where monks or nuns live, eat, sleep, study and practise Buddhism. Their lives are organised around spiritual practice and discipline. These functions can overlap: a monastery may include a temple or worship hall used by the wider community.
