Revise: Jewish Responses to Animal EthicsA central Jewish principle is tza’ar ba’alei chayim, the prevention of unnecessary animal suffering. It has practical consequences: animals should rest on Shabbat, and a working animal should not be muzzled to prevent it from eating while it works. These teachings recognise that animals have needs even when they are being used for human benefit.
