Revise: Places of WorshipA temple is a building used for religious activities. It may contain a main hall, a shrine room, a meditation space and facilities for teaching. A vihara is a Buddhist monastery: its residential role allows monks or nuns to live together and devote their lives to the Dhamma.

Distinguish a shrine from a shrine room: the shrine is the devotional focus within the room. It is often the shrine or Buddha image that faces east, not necessarily the whole room.

A shrine room provides a setting for meditation and devotion. The shrine may occupy part of the room and contain a buddharupa, an image of the Buddha, together with candles, incense and offerings. In Mahayana Buddhism, bodhisattva images may also be included.
