Paper 3
Revise: Festivals and RetreatsA retreat involves stepping away from everyday distractions to concentrate on religious practice. Rather than simply remembering the Buddhist path, participants devote time to following it through meditation, study and disciplined living. Retreats may last a day, a weekend or much longer, and can involve lay Buddhists as well as monks and nuns.
For questions about Great Britain today, explain how shared celebrations strengthen Buddhist communities and how retreats provide time for religious practice.
Distinguish Vassa, a retreat period, from Kathina, the festival of giving that follows it.
