In a Christian family, children may learn about God not only through what adults tell them, but also through everyday activities: praying together, attending church and seeing parents help others.

A strict religious upbringing may therefore produce the opposite of what parents intend. If children feel they have no choice, they may resent religious expectations and reject belief when they become more independent. Some critics describe such pressure as ‘brainwashing’, although this is a criticism of imposed belief, not a neutral description of every religious upbringing.
