Revise: Crime and Punishment in HinduismPrayashchitta, penance or expiation, offers a further way of responding to wrongdoing. Practices such as charity, fasting or pilgrimage address the offender’s moral and spiritual condition. This is distinct from danda: a legal punishment protects social order, while expiation concerns the person’s response to their own wrongdoing.
