Revise: Ethical Arguments on Racial DiscriminationPositive discrimination gives special help or preferential treatment to people from groups that have been disadvantaged or unfairly treated. Its purpose is to improve opportunities and representation, rather than to exclude a group because it is considered inferior.
Make examples specific: being given a job or promotion because someone belongs to an under-represented racial group illustrates positive discrimination; simply getting a job does not.
In an evaluation, explain competing arguments and reach a justified conclusion. If the claim says ‘best way’, compare positive discrimination with alternatives such as education.
