Union with God means overcoming spiritual separation and becoming God-centred. It is connected with mukti, liberation from rebirth, but spiritual freedom is not only a hope for after death. Sikhs can live in awareness of God while working, maintaining relationships and serving their community.

Spiritual liberation: freedom from the cycle of rebirth and the fullest realisation of the self in union with God.

‘Negative’ mukti means freedom from something, not that liberation is bad. ‘Positive’ mukti describes what is realised or attained.

Do not describe karma as an unchangeable fate or mukti as simply a reward earned by collecting good deeds: personal effort and God’s grace both matter.

For a question about barriers to mukti, explain how each barrier distracts a person from God or encourages selfish behaviour; naming it alone is not a developed explanation.
