Revise: IconsAn icon is a sacred image of Christ, a saint or a religious event, used to express Christian belief and support devotion. Most icons are two-dimensional, such as paintings or mosaics. Their religious subject, meaning and use matter more than a particular artistic style.
Distinguish veneration of an icon from adoration: Orthodox Christians believe adoration belongs to God alone.
Explain how an icon expresses a particular belief, rather than simply saying that it helps Christians pray.
When evaluating icons, compare the Orthodox arguments about the Incarnation and veneration with the Reformed objection to worshipping God through images. Explain which argument you find stronger and why.
