Revise: SawmSome spend this period in i’tikaf, a retreat in a mosque. Setting aside ordinary distractions creates time for study, prayer and repentance. Observing Laylat al-Qadr thus joins remembrance of the first revelation with a present-day response to it: worshipping Allah and trying to live by the Qur’an’s guidance.

Some Muslims undertake i’tikaf, a retreat in a mosque, to devote time to study, prayer and reflection away from ordinary distractions. Others increase their worship without taking a retreat. The purpose is not simply to remain awake, but to use the time sincerely to remember Allah and seek forgiveness.
