Revise: Origin and Value of Human Life in BuddhismThe traditional wording of the First Precept is ‘I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures’. In AN 8.39, refraining from killing is described as giving other beings freedom from danger, animosity and oppression. Protecting life is therefore a practical gift to others, not simply avoidance of personal wrongdoing.
