Revise: Sacramental Nature of RealityThe person prepares by examining their conscience: reflecting honestly on their actions in the light of Christian teaching. They confess their sins to a priest and express contrition, meaning sorrow for sin together with a resolve not to sin again. Confession gives outward expression to taking responsibility; contrition expresses the inward turning back towards God.

In a 2014 letter about criminal justice, Pope Francis emphasised compensation for harm, acknowledgement of wrongdoing and contrition. He argued that justice must go beyond punishment to help offenders change and reintegrate into society. He also stressed that victims' needs must not be overlooked.
