Specification 3.6 · Paper 1, Paper 2
Revise: The Four Marks of the ChurchIn Christianity, the Church means the community of believers, not simply a building. Its four marks are its essential characteristics: it is one, holy, catholic and apostolic. These describe what Christians believe God makes the Church, as well as qualities Christians are called to express in their lives.
Explain each mark as a belief about the Church, then link it to Catholic practice today.
Distinguish ‘catholic’, meaning universal or whole, from ‘Catholic’, naming the Church in communion with the Pope.
For an evaluation, consider challenges such as Christian division or members’ wrongdoing, explain the Catholic response, and reach a supported judgement.
